Business: GST collection has registered an increase of 4.6 percent on an annual basis. According to official data, the total GST collection in October this year stood at around Rs 1.95 lakh crore. Whereas in the same month last year it was Rs 1.87 lakh crore.
Decline in cess collection
According to the data, Central GST (CGST), State GST (SGST) and Integrated GST (IGST) all have registered growth in the month of October, while Cess collections have declined.
Nine percent increase in seven months
A growth of 9 percent was recorded in the total GST collection in the first seven months (April-October) of the financial year 2025-26. This is the highest since the implementation of GST in 2017.
Record gross collection of Rs 22.08 lakh crore in FY 2025
India’s GST system has achieved a major milestone with a record gross collection of Rs 22.08 lakh crore in 2024-25. This represents an increase of 9.4 percent compared to the previous year. The average monthly GST collection stood at Rs 1.84 lakh crore, the highest since the implementation of GST in 2017.
GST revenue increased by 0.2 percent
Gross domestic revenue, which indicates local sales, rose 2 per cent to Rs 1.45 lakh crore in October, while import taxes rose nearly 13 per cent to Rs 50,884 crore. However, GST refunds also increased by 39.6 per cent year-on-year to Rs 26,934 crore. Whereas the net GST revenue stood at Rs 1.69 lakh crore, which shows an increase of 0.2 percent compared to the previous year.
Continuous increase in GST collection in few years
There has been a steady increase in GST collections over the last few years, from Rs 11.37 lakh crore in 2020-21 to Rs 20.18 lakh crore in 2023-24, reflecting stronger economic activity and better compliance. The recent GST collection shows a positive direction for India’s economy.
The GST Council, constituted under the Constitution to guide the GST policy, has played an important role in shaping the system. It is chaired by the Union Finance Minister and includes the Finance Ministers of the states and other key officials. Since its formation in 2016, the Council has held 55 meetings in which several important decisions have been taken to make the GST system simpler and more business-friendly.
