Business: Adani Group on Tuesday announced its foray into the battery energy storage sector. The group will install a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) of 1,126 megawatt/3,530 megawatt-hour (MWh) capacity at Khavra, Gujarat. The project will be not only India’s largest, but also one of the world’s largest single-location energy storage projects.
Target to commission the project by March 2026
According to the company, more than 700 battery containers will be installed in this state-of-the-art facility and it is targeted to be operational by March 2026. This unit will be part of the world’s largest renewable energy complex being built in Khavra.
BESS system will make renewable energy stable
Battery storage systems aim to make renewable energy like solar and wind more reliable. This technology saves electricity for use when there is little or no production, such as at night or on less windy days. This increases grid stability, reduces electricity bills and reduces dependence on fossil fuels.
Use of advanced lithium-ion technology
Adani Group said that this project is being developed with advanced lithium-ion battery technology and energy management system to ensure better performance and efficiency. The capacity of the project will be such that it will be able to store and supply 1,126 MW electricity for about three hours.
Know what Chairman Gautam Adani said
Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani said that energy storage is the cornerstone of a renewable energy-based future. Through this landmark project, we are not only setting global standards but also reiterating our commitment towards India’s energy self-reliance and sustainability.
Target of 50 GWh storage capacity by 2030
The group said it plans to increase its storage capacity to 15 GWh by 2027 and to 50 GWh over the next five years. This investment of the company is being considered a major step towards making India self-reliant in clean energy infrastructure on a large scale.
